The Technique in African American Etchings
Etchings are a form of art where the artist, using special tools scratches an image in reverse onto a metal plate.
For example, everything that is black on these images was actually scratched out on a piece of metal. The plate is then dipped in a bath of acid, or has acid washed over it. The acid "bites" into the metal, where it is exposed, leaving behind lines sunk into the plate.
The plate is then inked all over, and the ink wiped off the surface, leaving only the ink in the etched lines. The images were then created by pressing the inked plate on to paper. Each print, because of varying amounts of ink and the wear on the plate, is unique.
Plates are almost always destroyed or scored through after printing has been completed to ensure no further prints are made. This limits the edition (hence the term Limited Edition) and increases the value and price of each print.
TO MAINTAIN SAFETY AND INTEGRITY AS WELL AS SUBSTAIN REASONABLE TRANSPORT COSTS, THIS ART IS NOT SHIPPED FRAMED.
